July, 1937, son of Josef Görlach, agricultural expert, and Elisabeth
Görlach,
nee Volk. Evacuated to Bohemia, attended primary school at Friedland,
in 1944
moved to Bad Harzburg (Lower Saxony), completed primary and secondary
education
(A levels 1957). Studied English Language and Literature, Classic and Indo-European Studies at the universities of Berlin, Durham, Heidelberg and Oxford (1957-68), interrupted by political imprisonment in East Germany (1961-64). Staatsexamen Berlin, FU, 1966. Lecturer in the English Department of Heidelberg University (1967-84) of Medieval Studies, English Language History and English Linguistics. Heidelberg Dr.phil. 1970. Married (1971) to Mechthild G., nee Pohlmann; two boys born 1975 and 1977. |
